LA CRUZ DE HUANACAXTLE

About 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, along the coast, is what once was a tiny fishing village called La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, or La Cruz for short.

A few years ago, FONATUR (Mexico’s development agency) decided to invest in La Cruz and turn it into an upscale community with a marina at its heart.

Even beyond the world-class Riviera Nayarit Marina, the village is a beautiful place to wander and explore. You can still find glimpses of that small fishing village. The tranquil waterfront is where fishermen still mend their nets, just next to the galleries, shops, and boutiques lining the cobblestone streets.

The marina’s 400 slips create a demand for restaurants to suit every palate and a thriving music scene.

For golfers, there are seven first-class golf clubs within a 45-minute drive. You won’t be bored in this small town.

Furthermore, the town is just as close to the booming city of Puerto Vallarta as the sleepy but stunning coastal village of Punta de Mita. And only a few minutes away from Bucerias.

With all of these amenities, it’s no wonder the expat community is flourishing. It’s still small-town Mexico, but with the high-end amenities you’d expect from a big city.

There are a few luxury residential communities catering mainly to North Americans who are in on this secret gem. It’s mostly condos, but some houses can be found. However, since the village held strict on the kind of developments allowed, it’s been a slow and sensible growth.

There has been an emphasis on sustainable buildings and green spaces.
